Every child deserves the right to education. Yet, in Bangladesh, countless children are deprived of this fundamental right due to poverty. The inability to afford schooling has left a significant portion of the youth uneducated and ill-equipped for the future. At Nabir Foundation, we believe in the transformative power of education. We are committed to breaking the cycle of educational poverty in Bangladesh.
The Reality of Child Poverty in Bangladesh
Poverty remains a pressing issue in Bangladesh, with a large portion of the population living below the poverty line. According to UNICEF, approximately 20% of children aged 6-14 engaged in child labour instead of attending school. These children often work in hazardous conditions, earning meagre wages that barely suffice to support their families. The dire economic circumstances force many families to prioritize immediate financial needs over education, perpetuating a cycle of poverty that spans generations.
Barriers to Education
Several factors contribute to the high rate of out-of-school children in Bangladesh:
- Financial Constraints: Many families need help to afford to send their children to school due to the costs associated with tuition, uniforms, and school supplies.
- Child Labor: Many families rely on their children’s income to survive. Consequently, children are forced into child labour, sacrificing their education for their family’s immediate needs.
- Gender Inequality: In some communities, cultural norms prioritize boys’ education over girls’, leading to higher dropout rates among girls.
- Lack of Access: Remote and rural areas often need more proper infrastructure, including schools and transportation, making it difficult for children to attend school.
The Consequences of Educational Poverty
- Cycle of Poverty: Without education, these children are more likely to remain trapped in a cycle of poverty. Lack of education limits their job prospects and earning potential in the future.
- Vulnerability to Exploitation: Uneducated children are more susceptible to exploitation, including child labour, early marriage, and involvement in criminal activities.
- Lost Potential: Every child has unique talents and potential waiting to be unlocked. Education is necessary for these talents to be tapped, but with it, society will be able to gain valuable contributions.
Our Approach at Nabir Foundation
